An amazing thing about this phenomenon is the amount of people who think they grew up poor when they grew up solidly middle to upper middle class, but just had a network of richer people they knew. This is especially prevalent in the 50 and under crowd. joshuaackerman/1534197304596434949

Their considering of themselves as poor really shows just how much they don’t grasp the reality of the situation: something like 11% of our households are under the poverty line and that number is so low you can barely eat with that money.
