I see (and have heard) this a lot. A strong majority of white people are blind to any privilege that isn’t money-based. And thus, for them, “I grew up poor” is some sort of equalizer. They think they understand other experiences. They actively don’t get it. ravenscimaven/1376615557559111682

They also don’t grasp that “having privilege” doesn’t automatically mean your life was awesome. This requires a lot of (extremely worthwhile) effort they just don’t want to put into life.
